In an era where privacy compliance is no longer optional, Captain Compliance is stepping up to make data privacy simple, scalable, and stress-free for brands of all sizes. Built by a team of privacy and compliance experts, the platform offers a full suite of tools—from cookie consent banners and automated transparency pages to privacy notice generators and DSAR portals - all designed to keep businesses compliant and ahead of legal risk. We sat down with founder Richart Ruddie to learn how his company is taking automation of data privacy to the next level.

CAPTAIN COMPLIANCE LINKEDIN

To start off, how would you describe what your tool does - especially for someone new to data privacy?

Completely automate your data privacy requirements. Starting with our superhero product for Cookie consent management provides users an easy way to be compliant and avoid legal issues. In addition to our cookie consent management tools we also provide an adaptive privacy notice generator.

Was there a particular moment when you realized, “This is a huge problem, and I need to do something about it”?

When I started to see headline fines every single day about companies that were violating privacy frameworks sometimes knowingly and in many cases unknowingly. Thats when the light bulb went off that through software tools these problems can be solved before it becomes an expensive legal issue.

From your experience, what’s something most brands get completely wrong when it comes to privacy compliance?

Unfortunately we've seen brands think they don't need to be compliant until its too late. We had one client get hit with a 5 million dollar class action lawsuit and sure enough they signed up the very next day. Don't let that be you.

What part of your background prepared you to take this on? What led you to build this?

I ran one of the biggest digital marketing agencies specializing in ORM previously and realized that there was a big need on the other side of the table that I wanted to capitalize on while we're still in the early stages of the privacy laws and litigation.

What’s the first feature your customers tend to fall in love with?

Our cookie & pixel scanner. It's super fast and gives you an initial risk overview of whats on your website.

There are a few privacy tools out there - what sets yours apart?

We have a team of privacy experts who built this product with the ability to customize, configure, and continuously update it to meet current and future regulatory requirements while helping with integration to match your website or apps theme.

What’s a big industry shift that more brands need to be paying attention to?

The hundreds of demand letters and lawsuits happening each week that is costing business owners millions of dollars. It's crazy that you can just subscribe to our software solution and fix the problem while using trust and consent as a differentiator to beat your competitors and have that competitive advantage for such a small monthly fee compared to what you gain.

Building a company is never a straight line - what’s one lesson you had to learn the hard way?

Building a company with real long term enterprise value takes really long hours (the types where you don't even have time to eat) and thats with the emergence of integrating AI to help us build faster.

If you had the chance to rewind to Day 1, what’s one thing you might approach differently?

Very little because there's no guarantee we'd learn from something if it didn't actually happen. We can live in the simulation or we can live in reality and fight like hell to ensure we protect all of our clients and do as we say.

And lastly, what’s the best piece of advice that’s stuck with you through it all?

It's not where you start but where you finish.
